Unix is full of small little programs called 'commands' that each perform a little task. They are usually typed in at the shell prompt.

There are thousands of commands available on most systems that do everything from reading email to creating .pdf files. Even though the particulars vary from command to command, all commands have a common syntax that you should become familiar with.

Commands have the following format:

command-name options arguments

'Command-name' is of course the name of the command!
