One thing that a lot of people thinking of joining ask is 'What do I get from Compsoc?'. First and foremost Compsoc is a great way to meet new people. We've got over 800 members and growing from almost every Faculty and Course on campus. No matter what your interest in computers is like, or how deep your knowledge goes, Compsoc has something for everyone.
Providing one of the most interesting and broad range of events on campus, Compsoc has repeatedly been acknowledged for its success as a college society through the many awards Compsoc has received. You really don't need any computing experience whatsoever to join, learn and enjoy yourself. If that wasn't good enough for you, here's what else you get...
Every Compsoc member gets their own personalised e-mail address of the form username@compsoc.nuigalway.ie. We give you over 100 times the space that Hotmail does so no lost mails and none of those viagara ads. There's a nifty Webmail interface on this site or you can use a mail client on our server.
Every Compsoc member can host their own website, and our tutorials will give you the skills to make it look great. If you have your own domain then we can set up your account to host it for free.
Right now we're giving our members over 500 Mb of storage space to use for storage, mail and web space. That's 20 times what your Computer Services account will hold and 7 times what an IT account holds. It's perfect for projects, backups, storage and hosting your website. Your files are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from anywhere with an internet connection.
Our members can use IRC (Internet Relay Chat), 'talk' and 'write' to communicate among one another. Why phone someone to arrange lunch them when you can talk to them live online for free. Compsoc also provides mailing lists that you can use if you're having problems with anything.
Compsoc provide access to a Linux computing environment on our dual processor Linux server. By next September we plan to have a new dual processor server running Solaris. We provide access to many programs, compliers, debuggers, servers and databases that our members can use for their course work and private projects. Many members don't need these and can amuse themselves talking to other members online and working on their website. For members interested in learning more about computing our server provides an excellent environment and experienced members are only a talk away when you need help.
Compsoc is involved in a number of projects including many cool projects such as Building a Cluster, Parallel Computing, Game Development in OpenGl and Admin training. The list of projects continues to grow over time especially when members are free of exams and projects for a few weeks.
